Atlantic Terminal-Barclays Center
I was going through some old photos and found a photo from 2002 of the construction of Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. It had me thinking of all the changes that have happened in this area from when it was home to the Fort Greene meat market. I remember when I took the photo the area sill had a handful of tile stores among other building supply stores/companies. I also remember the old LIRR terminal-what a dump!
The above photo from 1973 shows the same corner, more or less. You’ll notice the Samuel Underberg building is still there in 2002.
This photo is from a similar time period as the photo above but from a different vantage point.
Different intersection, same area. All of this is now Atlantic Terminal.
Researching online I was surprised to learn that the planning for Atlantic Terminal goes back 1986. The “two 24-store Art Deco office towers” and “movie house” never materialized. We did get the “large retail complex” and there are brick town houses on South Portland Avenue. The article mentions a completion date of 1988. In 2002 parts seemed to still be under construction.
In the above photos from 2004 the Samuel Underberg building is still standing but not for long.
Here’s the cover for a NY Post insert from 2008. It shows the Frank Gehry designed building called “Miss Brooklyn” which was never built. The two structures to left were also never built; the red-blocked building towards the back did get constructed.
Below are a few photos of the area from last year. You’ll see the red building, Barclays Center and Atlantic Terminal.
