Schindler’s Shoes/Treadeasy

This ghost sign for “Schindler’s Shoes” is located at the corner of Bergen Street & Nostrand Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn

The store itself was located was a few blocks south at 728 Nostrand Avenue.

I don not know how long they were in business but I have seen references from the 1920s (with an earlier address of 703-705 Nostrand Avenue) through the 1940s.

The 1940s tax photo for 615 Nostrand Avenue shows the corner and an ad for Savorin Coffee which I suspect is later than the Schindler’s Shoes ad.

Although I couldn’t find a photo of the original ad, the 1940s tax photo for 1375 Bedford Avenue shows what I suspect is the exact ad! This photo is shown in my previous post for Pearline/Grant Statue

Here we can make out the ad copy: “Beautifully designed for COMFORT” along with “Treadeasy Shoes”.

Treadeasy was a popular brand of shoes and a number of stores carried them such as Martin’s department store in the Downtown Brooklyn shopping area.
